    1. 4.5 Fast paced. Interesting, imperfect characters. Constant "surprises." Dry humor. I really enjoyed this second Garrison Gage mystery -which I listened to - read by Steven Roy Grimsley, who was terrific. Looking forward to number three.

    2. Another awesome Garrison Garrison Gage thriller. If you liked the first one, you will really like this one as well. It has an ex-girlfriend, a Mafia boss, an ambitious Atheist activist, and the ever popular pouty newspaper reporter girlfriend. Throw in a recently adopted, troubled, teenage daughter, and that is about as much as you want to handle. The author manages them all very well and even throws in a couple surprises at the end.

    3. Another ' hit' for Scott William CarterWhat could possibly be better than reading a book by Scott William Carter in one sitting? Easy - it's reading a second book by Scott William Carter in one setting! A Desperate Place for Dying is a great book to read and it is as good as his first book of the series, A Gray and Guilty Sea. Both are we incredibly well written and provoking.

    4. I kept notes while reading this but can't post as they are far too ranty and go on forever. Suffice to say: Hero is an emotionally unavailable douche, which is fine. But women flock to him. They ALL give him the sexy eye, which strikes me as ridiculous. Or act outrageously jealous when he so much as mentions knowing other women. An FBI agent asks him out during a major arrest I mean 😆😆😆😆 really? No. All of the no. Professional women in male dominated areas wouldn't do this. I can't e [...]

    5. An excellent follow-up!!This second book in the Garrison Gage series is just as great as the first, possibly better in some ways. This story has a greater sense of urgency and intrigue. The emotional drama spreads over a wider spectrum as well. And it's also like 2 stories in onee reappearance of Gage's wife's killer in his life and the search to find the killer of his former lover being the most prevalent storyline. Throw in the teenage angst of his newly assumed daughter, the complexities of h [...]

    7. A great read. I wanted more Gage and Zoe. You don't deserve Carmen. How about Barnacle bluffs in the summer time:)

    9. I enjoyed this book much more than the first.Gage came alive for me. He no longer sounded like an overly grumpy crippled septugenarian, which he isn't. Just a grumpy disabled forty-something who too often feels sorry for himself. But his world has expanded -- he cares for Zoe although he isn't happy to admit it. And he has Carmen,, and a very good friend in Alex. He has come alive period. And he is a much more enjoyable read than before. I'm glad the character evolved back into a more human form. [...]

    10. I'm not liking the road Gage's character is traveling. He was quite likable in the first book. Sympathy for losing his wife to murder, sympathy for his need to use a cane. Rooting for him to find love again. Liking his character because he took it upon himself to find out what happened to the girl washed up on the beach. This 2nd in the series, Gage seems to be depicted as more of a womanizer, although all in his head and he doesn't act on it, but the thoughts are strong and disappointing to me. 11. Garrison Gage is hiding from his past and thinks that he is detached from people. But when the mobster that ordered the murder of his wife gets out of prison for good behavior, his past catches up with him. He also realized that there are still people in the world that he cares deeply about.I love the dark humor Gage uses as a defense mechanism. His relationship with Zoe is your typical father/teenager one. But it's interesting how they navigate the pitfalls.Gage investigates the murder of a for [...]

    12. I want another book by this author with Garrison Gage as the main character. I thought it was a great story and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I bought this book after reading the first one in this series. I'd advise others to read them in order for the background of the story. Just found out there is a #3 so O bought it.

    13. Your site credits Jack Nolte, but my copy lists Scott William Carter as the author. At any rate, not a bad book. Many good ideas and a twist at the end, but too many careless mistakes, like mentioning John Coltrane singing. He actually was a jazz saxophonist. And another proofreading would caught many of those typos or ?Probably won't read this author again - at least for a few years.
