    1. ”It would still have made more sense to boil the bastard down to make glue, Bäckström thought. For in spite of his many failings and shortcomings, he was still a man with a strong sense of basic justice.”Rainn Wilson is Bäckström in the new TV series. They have placed Bäckström in Oregon instead of Sweden.Stockholm Police Detective Evert Bäckström is assigned to lead a team to investigate the murder of a young woman. She had been going to school to be a police officer in the small to [...]

    3. First the 2014 "Backstrom" TV show:"Backstrom" centers on Everett Backstrom (staring Rainn Wilson), an "overweight, offensive, irascible" detective who is engaged in a constant struggle with his "self-destructive" tendencies, and is part of a team of eccentric criminologists. Here is what I can glean so far about what has occurred so far. CBS television bought the rights to this property to introduce it as a series in July 2012. They produced the pilot, filmed in Vancouver. Then dropped it.20th C [...]

    4. This book will not be to everyone's tastes, but should appeal to fans of Steig Larsson (though I liked this better than The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) or J.K Rowling's latest, The Cuckoo's Calling. Maybe not quite 4 stars, but not quite 3.5 either. Short, fat, lewd and vain, Bäckström is hilariously insufferable, which makes for entertaining reading but can occasionally grate on the nerves. It becomes pretty clear after the first few chapters that if he is the one to actually solve the murde [...]

    5. It rarely happens that I cannot finish a book. I'm not sure if it's the translation or the author. It rambles on and on and doesn't say much. The main character has 3 things on his mind eating, drinking, and thinking obnoxious thoughts about women all women. I can certainly understand why he's in his 50s and single.I am about half way through a 480 page book and there has been nothing of substance. So I'm going to call it quits here. I feel this is waste of my time.My apologies to the author, [...]

    6. It doesn't happen all that often that I stop reading a book. Most of the time, I want to know what happens and as this is a murder mystery of course also know the murderer. Only problem, the book is very slow, after 200 pages hardly a thing has happened and I hate the main charachter.Read this book in a Dutch translation

    10. Reading is supposed to be fun, an easy way to distance oneself from our trivial daily lives and small problems. However, what happens when the escape becomes hard work instead of an amusing hour? There is only one word to describe this book: Tedious. Would have only given it half a star but couldn't figure out how. As a police procedural it is a remarkably over-detailed smorsgabord of every burp, hiccup and triplicate form the far too many characters experience or deal with in a given day. The r [...]

    11. This is the 1st in a new series by Leif Persson. Or rather it is an offshoot of the Fall of the welfare state series, in that Evert Backstrom, a minor character from those books becomes the protagonist, and major characters (Lars Martin Johansson, Holt, and Mattei) become minor ones in Linda. Backstrom is familiar as an egotistical detective who has risen to superintendent due to being promoted as a way of getting rid of him from numerous teams. He is widely seen as lazy, devious, racist and mis [...]

    12. A meticulous Scandi crime police procedural, one told with wit and intelligence and no small measure of on-the-job experience. When a young woman is murdered during an unusual heatwave in a Swedish summer, all the competent cops are sensibly on holiday. The flaky chief of police despatches one of the National Crime Squad’s least effective detectives to head up the task force assisting the rural police.Backstrom is a brilliant creation. Lazy, bigoted, boozy and not beyond fiddling his expenses, [...]

    13. O enredo? As personagens? A escrita? Considerei como falhadas as tent [...]

    15. Disappointing. It won a major Scandinavian prize so I was excited to find a new author. But the main character is a misogynistic asshole. I know it is deliberate, supposedly adding humour to the book but it comes across as dated and forced.

    23. I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Vintage Crime/Black Lizard!I am a huge fan of Nordic crime novels. This one is dedicated to Sjöwall and Wahlöö, who wrote the Martin Beck series, one of my favorites. I knew that it would be a slow-burner, like the Beck novels, which are not strictly whodunits but mostly focus on the grunt work that the detectives have to do in order to get results. I knew that there would be disappointed policemen and some cor [...]

Neil Smith) 27 June 2016ISBN: 9780857520876For starters, at 488 pages this is a good 188 pages too long. So much waffle. The hero, Evert Backstrom – No! Many reviewers have described him as unlikeable. Yes, in a way. Yet, apart from his unsavoury encounter with a reporter, he's no more boorish than many of our favourite hero cops. What grates is reading all his thoughts, and I do mean all. While most of us [...]

    25. The book was not as good as I thought it would be. I expected a thorough analysis of the killer's motivation and how criminality can occur in society as the author is a distinguished university teacher in criminology. I also expected more tension throughout the book. The first several hundered pages (dutch version has 525 pages in total) is more about the investigation going nowhere and inspector Backstrom who pretty much hates the world, especially women, loves himself, wants to solve crimes bu [...]

    26. imagine Bäckstrom as a cross between Columbo and Sergeant Bullock (from Batman comics) add a dose of police procedural and mix. as a character Bäckstrom is both unlikeable but engaging. However, I never got the sense that he actually did anything to solve this case. it all seemed like a lot of gut instinct and somehow the pieces came together. I didn't actually feel convinced that the man convicted of the crime was actually guilty. it still is an interesting look at crime and the different com [...]

Unica consolazione: era in edizione ultra economica.

    29. The book started out amusing in a cynical way. Lots of thought processes that were asides of what the characters really were thinking as they said something else. But then it went on for 465 dense, tedious pages. This was way too much and the book was rather slow to develop any real story. I plowed through it, but will not likely read another by this author. It has a despicable main character detective who doesn't redeem himself or get less despicable anywhere in this rather long drawn out polic [...]

    30. I liked the idea of the character of Backstrom, an anti-hero that seems to have more wrong with him than right. The problem with this book, though, is that it starts so slowly! I have to admit, I didn't finish it, and it's one of the few books I've started and not finished. The crime to be solved happens before the opening of the book, but I got about 20% into the book and nothing was happening! Backstrom hadn't even started investigating yet. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book, but I coul [...]
