Speech Competition Guidance

Each year at Forest Park School, we invite every child in the school, to take part in the school speech competition.

Your child must research, plan and prepare a speech over the October half term holiday in readiness for the first week back  in November (1st).

The competition begins at class level; two children from each class will go through to the whole school final, where they will compete against other children in their key stage (EYFS, KS1 or KS2). One winner from each key stage will be chosen and a runner up, these children will then go through to the Inter school speech competition at a later date.

Early Years

We welcome the children in the Early Years to enter but it is not compulsory.

Class Level

During the week beginning the 1st November, the children will have the opportunity to perform their speech to the

class, after which the teacher will provide feedback.

The children will be selected for the school final using a five point criteria that includes the following:

   Volume                        Speed                   Clarity                   Intonation                       Interest

Only two children from each year group will be chosen, if your child is successful at this stage, a letter will be sent home inviting you to watch your child’s performance in the whole school speech competition that takes place on the 12th

 November 2010.

                                                Tips for the children

  • Time the performance, so it is as near to 2 minutes as possible.
  • Research your topic well, so that you appear knowledgeable and enthusiastic about your topic.
  •  Make your speech interesting
  • We prefer your speech to be from memory but you may use prompt cards and appropriate visual aids.
  • Practice in front of a mirror and in front of your parents.
  • Ensure you stand up tall and check your uniform is smart and presentable.
  • Prepare an opening and closing sentence i.e. ‘’Good morning…’’
  • Keep a loud clear voice.
  • Engage the audience e.g. use humour
  • Enjoy yourself!

We look forward to hearing your speech, good luck.
