In today’s digital world, young people are more connected than ever. While this brings many positives, it also means they can be exposed to harmful content, often without actively seeking it out.

Recent insights show that many young people come across content through social media feeds, messaging apps and viral trends. This kind of content can quickly become normalised, making it even more important for parents and educators to understand the risks and know how to respond.
Exposure to violent material online can have a real impact. It may affect how young people feel, increasing anxiety or fear, and in some cases influencing behaviour or attitudes towards others. It can also blur the lines between what is real, safe and acceptable.
At Forest Park School, we believe that open conversations are key. Creating a safe space where young people feel comfortable talking about what they see online helps build trust and awareness. Encouraging them to question content, rather than passively consume it, is an important step in developing digital resilience.
There are simple but effective ways to support young people:
Stay interested and involved in their online world
Talk regularly about what they see and experience
Encourage positive online behaviours
Remind them they can always speak to a trusted adult
By working together, we can help young people feel safe, informed and supported as they navigate the online world.
